LeMoyne Scholars Program

Program Description
The LeMoyne College Scholars Institute (LSI) offers outstanding high school students the opportunity to gain a valuable head start on the college experience by taking courses from LeMoyne College professors during their last year of high school. The faculty who teach in the Institute endeavor to make the senior year both challenging and meaningful and to help students make a seamless transition form high school to college. During the academic year, participating students may earn six credits through completion of two college-level courses over two semesters.

2008 - 2009 Course Offerings
Fall 2008
CHM 122 Chemistry and the Consumer (3 College Credits) (LeMoyne Campus)
Students enrolled in this course will learn how the fundamental concepts of chemistry apply to everyday life. They will study the elements, including those that are essential and those that are dangerous to the environment, as well as the chemistry of foods, fabrics, toys, plastics and other common household products. Students will gain the tools necessary to think critically about chemistry in their personal environment.

Spring 2009
ECO 205 Economics of Public Policy Analysis (3 College Credits) (LeMoyne Campus)
This couse introduces students to basic economic concepts relevant to public policy analysis of national and international issues. The concepts of opportunity cost, supply and demand, market failure and cost benefit analysis are examined to provide a foundation to evaluate important problems facing countries around the world. Contemporary applications will include energy and resources, future technologies, environmental protection and global warming. Students will gain an understanding of the role private markets play in creating or solving some of the challenges facing society, as well as an understanding of when government intervention may be needed.

Fall 2008/Spring 2009
ITALIAN 101.5/102.5 College Italian (3 College Credits) (Bishop Grimes)
Students begin the study of Italian by learning the essentials of grammar, vocabulary building and composition. Students will have a sound basis for communicating in Italian as it is spoken and written today through the practice of four basic skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Various aspects of Italian contemporary life and culture will also be presented.
