LeMoyne Scholars Program

Program Description
The LeMoyne College Scholars Institute (LSI) offers outstanding high school students the opportunity to gain a valuable head start on the college experience by taking courses from LeMoyne College professors during their last year of high school. The faculty who teach in the Institute endeavor to make the senior year both challenging and meaningful and to help students make a seamless transition form high school to college. During the academic year, participating students may earn six credits through completion of two college-level courses over two semesters.

2009 - 2010 Course Offerings
Fall 2009
NSS 121 Global resources (3 College Credits) (LeMoyne Campus)
Resources can be thought of as anything that an organism needs for survival. While this holds true for all life forms, in this class we will focus primarily on humans and human societies. The consumption of resources often results in a struggle for survival and this competition manifests itself at many levels, from the town and region (which tribes and ethnic groups have access to the best land
and water supply), to the nation (control of the nation’s oil, water, mines) and to the world at large.

Spring 2010
PSY 101 (3 College Credits) (LeMoyne Campus)
A one semester broad overview of contemporary psychology—its diverse approaches to the understanding of behavior and the basic principles and research findings associated with each of these approaches. Specific areas of psychological inquiry discussed include physiological, cognitive and social psychology; learning, sensation and perception; emotion and motivation; personality and
psychopathology. This course is a prerequisite for most psychology courses.

Fall 2009/Spring 2010
ITALIAN 101.5/102.5 College Italian (3 College Credits) (Bishop Grimes)
Students begin the study of Italian by learning the essentials of grammar, vocabulary building and composition. Students will have a sound basis for communicating in Italian as it is spoken and written today through the practice of four basic skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Various aspects of Italian contemporary life and culture will also be presented.
